What is Broad Spectrum CBD? All Your Questions Answered

Broad Spectrum CBD

Let’s be honest… the world of cannabidiol (CBD) can be overwhelming, even if you’re not a newcomer.

It’s easy to get lost in the variety of products available, or to experience information overload when you’re learning about everything CBD-related.

It seems new products appear every day, along with terms you may not be familiar with.

Take broad spectrum CBD oil, for example. While CBD isolate and full spectrum have dominated the market, broad spectrum CBD is becoming more popular among customers, especially as awareness of the entourage effect becomes mainstream.

If that last paragraph has you scratching your head, don’t worry – you’re in the right place. In this article, we’ll explore everything you need to know about broad spectrum CBD.

What is Broad Spectrum CBD?

You may already know that CBD is a cannabinoid, or a substance found in the cannabis plant. What you may not know, however, is that when CBD is extracted from the plant, other substances are drawn out along with it.

This includes all the fatty acids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other cannabinoids – there are over 100 – that are naturally found in cannabis.

With some types of CBD oil, these additional substances are removed, resulting in a product that is around 99.9% pure CBD. This is known as CBD isolate.

CBD isolate is popular among those who want to avoid THC, and it can provide more consistent effects without other cannabinoids being present. But the downside of using CBD isolate is that you won’t benefit from the other cannabinoids, or the entourage effect.

The entourage effect is the interaction that takes place when you ingest multiple cannabinoids. It’s usually used to refer to the fact that THC and CBD enhance one another, resulting in more powerful benefits (like pain relief) than either cannabinoid provides on its own.

But the entourage effect can also involve the many other cannabinoids and terpenes that come from cannabis.

Many people who use CBD want to benefit from the entourage effect, so instead of CBD isolate, they take full spectrum CBD.

Also called whole plant CBD, full spectrum contains everything extracted from the plant, including other cannabinoids (like CBN, CBG, and THC) and terpenes.

That’s right, CBD oil can contain THC – but only if it’s full spectrum CBD oil. When it’s made from hemp, full spectrum CBD contains only traces of THC (under 0.3%). That’s not enough to get you high, but it could show on a drug test, or cause problems for those who are especially sensitive to THC. That’s where broad spectrum CBD comes in.

Similar to full spectrum, broad spectrum CBD contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes extracted from the cannabis plant, with one notable exception: THC.

Broad spectrum CBD oil is made by either removing THC from full spectrum oil, or adding additional cannabinoids and terpenes to CBD isolate.

What Are the Benefits of Broad Spectrum CBD?

Broad spectrum CBD is the middle ground between CBD isolate and full spectrum CBD, making it ideal for those who want to benefit from the entourage effect while avoiding all traces of THC.

Through the entourage effect, the other cannabinoids and terpenes that are present in the oil enhance the benefits of CBD, and also offer benefits of their own.

Since the actual CBD is the same in all three types of CBD oil, the benefits are the same as well – but their strength may vary based on whether or not the entourage effect is at work.

Regardless of the type of product, though, CBD can relieve pain and anxiety, improve sleep and mood, and lower inflammation, among other benefits.

One of the most common complaints about marijuana is that it can cause paranoia and anxiety, which is due to the THC content.

Some people with anxiety find that even the trace amounts of THC that are found in full spectrum CBD oil can trigger panic attacks or otherwise worsen their anxiety symptoms.

With the growing availability of broad spectrum CBD, however, this doesn’t have to be a problem anymore.

Broad spectrum CBD allows more people to experience the entourage effect, without having to worry about consequences of ingesting any THC.

The Entourage Effect Without THC

Most of the available research on the entourage effect specifically looks at the interaction between THC and CBD.

But the entourage effect is definitely not limited to these two cannabinoids; it involves all the substances found in the cannabis plant working together to provide the maximum therapeutic benefit.

This means even broad spectrum CBD oil, which contains zero THC, can provide the entourage effect.

After all, every cannabinoid can interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, and that’s why other cannabinoids like CBN, CBG, and CBC are beginning to draw more interest.

These lesser-known cannabinoids don’t only enhance CBD; they also bring plenty of benefits to the table in their own right.

Unfortunately, there is far less research available on these other substances when compared to THC and CBD, so our understanding of their role in the entourage effect is limited.

That said, what we know so far is promising. For example, cannabigerol (CBG) is being studied for its ability to treat psoriasis, while cannabinol (CBN) has powerful sedating effects comparable to diazepam.

Does Broad Spectrum CBD Have Side Effects?

All forms of CBD oil can have minimal side effects. Most people experience no side effects at all, but others may notice dry mouth or sleepiness as side effects of CBD.

It’s possible that side effects may be more noticeable after ingesting full spectrum or broad spectrum CBD oil, since the entourage effect enhances the effects of CBD – or because other cannabinoids present can cause similar mild side effects.

If you take any medications or have a health condition, be sure to speak with a medical professional before taking any form of CBD oil.

CBD can affect the way your body metabolizes some medications, making them less effective, or causing them to build up in your body.
